Venice's lesser known and colorful twin, Burano is just a quick ferry ride away. Here are five reasons you should check it out.
1. The picturesque fishing village canals are lined with colorful houses. Legend tells us that fishermen painted their houses brightly so they could see them through the dense fog that often envelops the lagoon. The bold color also helps indicate where one resident's property ends and the next begins. The island is small enough that you'll likely be able to see them all! Which color house would you live in?
2. It's super laid back and provides a nice reprieve away from the crowded alley ways of Venice. You can stroll along the canal without the anxiety of being knocked in by a hoard of tourists.
3. While Burano is known for its handmade lace, much of what is being sold now is made by machine. To get a glimpse of the lace from the past, you can check out the Lace Museum.
4. Unsurprisingly, fresh seafood is plentiful. Many say you'll eat better here than in Venice. Restaurants often serve "risotto de gò," risotto cooked in a broth made from a typical fish in the Venice lagoon, "gò." It's creamy, delicate and delicious.
5. The journey is half the fun! It's a 40-minute trip from St. Mark's Square by a Venetian water bus, known as a vaporetto. It should only cost €6.50 per person
